Contrary to popular belief, bobcats/coyotes do not live only in rural environments. Sightings are quite common in Fate and throughout the DFW Metroplex. A sighting of a healthy bobcat/coyote does not constitute a threat to people and as long as their behavior is apparently normal, there is no reason for an Animal Care Services to respond.
Wild animals are very good at adapting and they have learned to survive in many different types of environments, usually despite the best efforts of people to eradicate them. Eradication is not feasible but even if it were, there is no way to prevent wildlife from returning. The best course of action is to educate the public about these animals as human interference is what is most often responsible for them exhibiting threatening behaviors.
Do's
(a) Keep small dogs and cats inside at night, (b) keep the covers secured on your trash receptacles, (c) keep your dog and cat on a leash, (d) report the coyote/bobcat sighting to the DFW Wildlife Coalition - (972) 234-9453, (e) try to consider that they were here first.
Don'ts
(1) Feed your pets on the back porch or leave food out overnight, (2) walk your small dog in wooded areas, (3) approach, chase, make noises at, throw rocks at or otherwise taunt a bobcat or coyote, (4) approach any wild animal that appears trapped, injured, or sick, if those circumstances exist, contact Animal Care Services at (972) 382-DOGS [3647], (5) try to touch a coyote, bobcat, or any other wild animal.
